Liz McCartney is dedicated to helping Hurricane Katrina survivors in St. Bernard Parish, a community just outside New Orleans. Her nonprofit St. Bernard Project has rebuilt the homes of more than 120 families. McCartney was named the 2008 CNN Hero of the Year and received $100,000 to continue her work just outside New Orleans. She was selected from among the top 10 CNN Heroes after six weeks of online voting at CNN.com.
